Ocean Spirit of Moray

UK

Ocean Spirit of Moray is a ketch run by Gordonstoun School to teach pupils seamanship in the Moray Firth and the seas of Northern Scotland. Ocean Spirit is a regular in The Tall Ships' Races and raced in every leg of the 2000 Trans-Atlantic race.


John Laing

UK

John Laing is a Shipwright Class steel Bermudan Ketch that was built for the Ocean Youth Club in 1990. She is now operated by Ocean Youth Trust South from her home base in Southampton and takes many hundred of young people on sail training voyages from March to November each year.


Gedania

Poland

Gedania was built in 1975 and has entered the Tall Ships' Races on several occasions. In 2005 she was rebuilt by Sail Training Association Poland. Her hull was extended and she is now almost 24 metres in length. She also had new sails, new equipment, a new crew and lots more new adventures.


Spaniel

Latvia

Spaniel was designed and built in Poland in 1979 as a single handed ocean racer. In 1980, Polish Yachtsmen took line honours in the Ostar 80 race after a 19 day Westward Atlantic Crossing. Privately owned since 1997, Spaniel is engaged in sail training for Latvian youngsters and has enjoyed successes in the many of the Tall Ships' Races.


Clyde Challenger

UK

Clyde Sail Training Trust is a youth sail training charity based in Scotland. Clyde Challenger is an 18m ocean racing yacht that has been modified to provide adventurous sail training for young people. Previously named "Glasgow Clipper" the vessel represented the City of Glasgow in four Clipper round the World races. Sturdy and safe with a remarkable turn of speed, Clyde Challenger will provide a challenging and exhilarating addition to the Tall Ship fleet for 2008.


Black Diamond of Durham

UK

Black Diamond of Durham was commissioned in 1972 for her original owner, Lt Cdr Lewis RN, who fitted her out to his own specification and raced her on the South coast.

In the early 1990's, Black Diamond was purchased by the Farimar Trust who stripped and refitted her for sail training. She was used in the North East of England for sail training, offering a sailing experience to young people from a disadvantaged background. Black Diamond has not missed a Tall Ships' Race since then.

Purchased by Sailing North East in 1999, she has been refitted again for a different type of client - corporate entertainment and teambuilding along with conventional sail training.


Williwaw

Belgium

Williwaw belongs to the Sail Training Association of Belgium (S.T.A.B.), having been entrusted to them from the city of Antwerp in 1998. S.T.A.B. completed a total restoration of Williwaw using volunteers and help from the National Maritime Museum.

Onboard Williwaw, Willy de Roos circumnavigated the American continent from east to west, sailing via the Northwest Passage in Greenland and the Bering Strait, reaching the west coast of North America before sailing onto Antarctica in 1979.

Williwaw is used for sail training young people and is a floating ambassador for the National Maritime Museum in Antwerp. In winter she is moored at the museum dock and in summer sails with young people onboard.


Esprit

Germany

Esprit is a cold moulded wooden boat with a modern schooner rig, gaff fore and bermuda main. She was built at the Bremer Bootsbau Vegesack GmbH (BBV) Shipyard in Bremen in 1995 and honoured in 1997 for her work promoting international understanding sailing with a 50/50 German and English crew, winning the Cutty Sark Trophy.

Since then Esprit has worked as a sail training vessel between Canada and Russia in the Baltic, taking part in all European Tall Ships Races and every leg of Tall Ships 2000. Esprit is owned by the JKW JugendKutterWerk Bremen e.V.


Zryw

Poland

Zryw was built in 1978 in the Maritime yacht shipyard of Leonid Teliga. She is used as a sail training vessel for adolescents and to help them pass the Polish Certificate of Competency. These young sailors gather experience from voyages in the Baltic Sea.


Urania

Netherlands

The Royal Netherlands Navy has owned a sail training ship, Urania, since 1830. The name comes from Greek mythology where Urania was the muse of astronomy. Her crest represents this with the signs of the zodiac and her motto means 'vigilance without fear'.

The current Urania is the sixth and was built in 2003/2004. The lines of Urania are based on the lines of the former Urania to a design of Olivier van Meer, but built to contemporary standards. She has accommodation for a crew of seventeen and is rigged as a ketch.


Antwerp Flyer

Belgium

Antwerp Flyer is aluminum, seagoing sailing yacht, designed by Ed Dubois (UK) and launched in 1991. The hull was constructed by Chantiers Navals de Biot (France) and the ship was finished in Belgium.

The ship was designed to sail in Northern Seas and has already made trips to Spitsbergen in the Arctic. Antwerp Flyer sails beautifully close to the wind, is fast and is very seaworthy, even in rough circumstances.
