SOME ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS FREQUENTLY ASKED BY THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

WHAT ARE THE TALL SHIPS' RACES?

These prestigious races are organised by Sail Training International. See www.sailtraininginternational.org for further details.

Race One starts in Liverpool and will race to Maloy in Norway. From Maloy the fleet will participate in a Cruise in Company to Bergen also in Norway. From Bergen,Race Two will get underway and will finish in Den Helder in the Netherlands.

WHERE WILL THE SHIPS BE BERTHED?

All visiting ships will be berthed in Albert Dock & Wellington Dock. The fully accessible ship, Lord Nelson will be berthed in Wellington Dock.

Berthing plans will be available on this site after ship registration concludes on 1st May 2008

HOW MANY SHIPS ARE EXPECTED?

Up to 70

HOW MUCH DOES ENTRANCE TO THE EVENT COST?

Access to both docks and the ships is free but some of the ships would welcome a small donation. There will also be a range of concerts taking place across the city and these will be subject to normal ticketing conditions and may have admission charges.

WHAT WILL BE HAPPENING AT THE SITES?

Lots of entertainment for all ages. Both sites will be open to the public from 12am to 10pm, Fri, and 10am 10pm Saturday & Sunday

WHEN WILL THE PROGRAMME BE AVAILABLE?

As with other large scale events, there will not be an official souvenir programme available until the week of the event. Look out for information in press articles and on TV and radio.

ENTERTAINMENT

There will be sea-themed street entertainment, a theatre ship hosting the "Shanties 08", marching bands and military bands.

The Royal Marines Band - www.royalmarinesbands.co.uk
will be playing around the sites and on board RFA Lyme Bay.

WHICH DAY SHOULD I GO?

The performers each day vary, but all vessels and attractions remain throughout the event.

The afternoon and evening of Friday 18th July is aimed primarily at local residents but visitors from outside the area will still be able to visit the event sites.

WHAT DISABLED FACILITIES ARE THERE AT THE EVENT?

Event Mobility Charitable Trust will be providing powered wheelchairs and electric scooters for the use of disabled, elderly and mobility impaired visitors to the show.
The charity requests a donation of £17 for the use of an electric scooter for the day. It operates entirely from the generosity of donations and any contribution would be greatly appreciated.

Access is possible to the upper deck of Training Ship Lord Nelson at Wellington dockand there will be access to all quaysides. Disabled access will be signposted.

Access around the site is reasonable, but everyone should remember that they are visiting historic docksides and access onto vessels is in some circumstances is difficult. Comfortable flat non-slip soles are advised.

There are disabled WCs throughout each site.

LOST CHILDREN

There is a welfare facility for children who become detached from their parties staffed by qualified staff on each site. Other welfare points will be signposted.

CAN I BRING MY DOG?

Sorry, - NO. Only guide dogs for the blind and assistance dogs for the disabled will be allowed on the site.

WHEN ARE THE TALL SHIPS ARRIVING?

The progress of the ships towards Liverpool is governed by wind direction and tides so we cannot guarantee definite arrival times.

Generally the ships will arrive in the River by the 17th/18th July and leave on the 21st July as part of the parade of sail.

WHICH TALL SHIPS WILL ATTEND?

WILL THERE BE A NAVAL SHIP OPEN TO THE PUBLIC?

Yes - RFA Lyme Bay moored of the cruise line terminal, princes parade.

CAN I BRING MY BOAT TO THE EVENT?

Sorry,- No - all available berths in the docks have been allocated to Tall Ships for this Event. Should you be sailing to the event please contact Liverpool Marina for information on their berthing arrangements: 0151-707-6777 or billy@liverpoolmarina.com.

WILL THERE BE AN AIRCRAFT CARRIER?

Due to operational commitments, this is not possible.

WILL THERE BE AN AIR/SEA DISPLAY?

Not currently

WHERE CAN I STAY?

Hotels and guesthouses are already beginning to fill up for this weekend so you are advised to book early. Details of available hotels are given on the Mersey Partnership website www.VisitLiverpool.com

TALL SHIPS CLOSING TIMES

A number of Tall Ships will be open to the public. Some of the vessels may request a discretionary donation to be made prior to getting on board.

Please note if a ship has a corporate hospitality function on board it may be closed to the public.

Equally, in the interests of safety if the ship is undertaking a crew changeover period it may also be closed to the public.

DOES ANY MONEY GO TO CHARITY?

The RNLI are the nominated charity for the Tall Ships race, Liverpool 2008 and their official collectors will be in attendance at each of the event sites, details on the RNLI website.
