Travel Information and Direction Tall Ships Races 2008

The City of Liverpool as European Capital of Culture in 2008 will host the Tall Ships Races 2008 from the 18 - 21 July 2008

The Tall Ships will be berthed at two venues within the city of Liverpool, Albert Dock Complex, City Centre which will host the B, C, and D class ships. Wellington, Dock Regent Road 1.4 miles
north of the city centre will host B, and A class ships.

There is no parking within the Wellington Dock, Regent Road area of the City. If travelling by car please use Park + Ride sites or City Centre car parks, and the shuttle bus service to this venue

There is a Taxi rank located outside the main terminal building

The journey into Liverpool City Centre is 7 miles and takes approximately 20 minutes

 

Shuttle Bus Service throughout the event 18 - 21 July 2008

A regular return shuttle bus service will operate between St Nicholas Place opposite the Crowne Plaza Hotel to Wellington Dock. Regent Road. St Nicholas Place is a short walk to the Albert Dock Complex, where you have an opportunity to view the remaining ships within the Tall Ships fleet.

The service will be DDA compliant

The service will be operated by Arriva North West in conjunction with Merseytravel

The shuttle service will run between the hours 10.00am and 10.00pm Friday 18, Saturday 19, and Sunday 20, this service will not run to Wellington Dock on Monday 21 as the ships will move from their berths to the River Mersey for the Parade of Sail starting at early morning on the morning of the 21 July

The Ships will muster on the River Mersey from 12.00noon with the official start of the Parade at 2.00pm

Rail Travel

Lime Street Station is Liverpool's mainline station with connection to all mainline services.

The station offer links to Merseyrail the two stations designated for the Tall Ships Races 2008 for Wellington Dock Regent Road please use the Northern Line alighting at Sandhills, for Albert Dock Complex please use City Centre Loop Line alighting at Moorfield Station

Travel by Road

Park and Ride Sites

Three Park and Ride sites will be available for this event:

  • to the North of the City at Aintree Race Course
  • to the south City near to John Lennon Airport
  • and for those travelling from the South and West, at Jct 5 of the M53 at Hooton Airfield

All three sites will be signposted using Highway Agency and AA Signs.

The Park + Ride Site will be open between 9am and 10pm between 18 July and 21 July.

First bus departure at 9.15 from Park + Ride sites to Liverpool.

Last bus will depart from Paradise Interchange Bus Station
opposite Albert Dock Complex returning you designated Park + Ride Site at 9.15pm

A fee of £8.00 per car / there is no coach parking at these sites

The Park + Ride service will alight at Paradise Street Interchange, which is opposite the Albert Dock Complex, and 5 mins walk from the shuttle services to Wellington Dock, St Nicholas Place.

Parade of Sail Monday 21st July, due to the ships moving from their berths Wellington Dock will be closed to the public on Monday 21 July.

Members of the public wishing to use the Park + Ride site on Monday 21 July will be offered the opportunity to view the ships on the River Mersey at designated viewing points.

The Park + Ride will alight at Paradise Street Interchange Bus Station in Liverpool City Centre opposite the Albert Dock Complex.

Please remember that the point your alight at will be your return pick up point for these services.

Mersey Ferries

Mersey Ferries run a regular service between the Wirral and Liverpool City Centre.

The service runs from the Wirral, Woodside Birkenhead / Seacombe Wallasey between 11am and 6pm.

Mersey Ferries are running extra services throughout the weekend.

Road closure plans

Due to the volume of pedestrians wishing to visit the Tall Ships venues there will be road closures in and around the main venue site. Also there will be additional traffic on the road network within the city so please plan your visit and give yourself extra time for your travel journey.

In the interests of public safety it may be necessary to close the Strand to road traffic on some occasions between Friday 18 July and Monday 21 July.
