21/07/2008
It is estimated over 1,000,000 people saw one of the largest fleets of tall ships ever assembled in the UK over the four day maritime extravaganza.
On Monday, July 21 alone hundreds of thousands of people flocked to Liverpool and the Wirral and Sefton coastlines to watch Stavros S Niarchos, which is crewed by 40 Liverpool youngsters who won a city council competition, lead the Parade of Sail at 2pm.
The 60 vessels, from 18 countries, including Brazil, Poland, Oman and Germany, had been berthed in Liverpool's Albert and Wellington Docks since Friday and having been escorted out of the Mersey by several Royal Navy vessels are now set to assemble off the coast of Northern Ireland for the first race leg to Maloy, Norway on Wednesday, July 24.
After Maloy, the ships will head to Bergen, also in Norway, for the second leg to Den Helder in Holland.
It is the third time the Tall Ships event has been to Liverpool - competitors also sailed along the Mersey in 1984 and 1992.
